July 2: Edits, Edits, & Edits Again

View From My Window

Hunched over a laptop, I compared words, punctuation and formatting. It has come to the point where I have become a little sick of these characters. Same story, over and over again. One of the worst parts of the writing process is the editing and one of the worst parts of editing is the reading, re-reading, and more reading.

Last month, I was contacted by a publishing house. A short story I had submitted was accepted into an anthology. The next steps were for me to edit the edited document that was sent to me.

Yes, edit the edited documents.

I could be sitting at my desk, table or couch but no. Instead, I decided to work from my bedroom, the coolest room in the condo.

Cool as in cold with the ocean breeze filing the room as opposed to the stifling heat in the rest of the apartment. Trading the cool room for proper writing spaces meant back pains as I sat on the bed editing before the deadline.

Once I finished editing, I closed my laptop and breathed a sigh of relief. 10 hours working my day job, 3 hours of writing. Time for some relaxing as I dip into the book I am currently reading.

Happy Reading!

  1. Congratulations on the story acceptance! Agree about the editing part. I’m usually fine with revising stories, with big changes or line edits, but when it comes to the proofreading, reading and reading, until it is just exhausting to continue, it does become one of the worst parts of the process, as you say.
