Not sure when I first heard this quote but I really took it to heart. It is not unusual for me to set goals that to some are astronomical. In many instances, I tend to feel overwhelmed at just the thought of these goals. I start to take to heart the doubt others place in me.

However, this will not be the case this year. 2017 is the year where I will I own the path towards completing my goals.

Why I Set A Reading Goal

I love reading. As a child I learned that a book can be the gateway to another world when I 2eb0ce46-4037-41b9-82f0-15c8d511cf4e-2242-00000389bf8a5e89_tmpstart in my mom’s friend’s tv-less apartment with nothing but The Witches  by Roald Dahl to entertain me. Time flew by as I was lost in the world of Philadelphia Key and by the end of the novel (and our visit) I was hooked. Frequent travel caused by my dad’s military career and my parent’s love for exploring the world meant riding in the car or waiting in an airport for hours with nothing but a book to keep me company.

Then came the iPod, iphone, ipad and all other mobile devices that distracted me from reading. I would read occasionally (especially with the initial introduction of books) but it was not a priority for me.

Along Mr. King. Stephen King. I came across his book Just After Sunset.  The collection of short stories were so intriguing, not only was I hooked but I returned to my passion of writing. fa345a4f-ec89-424d-a352-dd4c7ad2405c-2242-0000039d9ae3e943_tmp

What does this all have to do with my Goodreads challenge?

Reading came naturally to me as a child. When I did not have many other options, I did not have to invest time in reading. By setting a high goal, I am challenging myself to make the time to read more often. It will take more effort on my part to make time to read when there is a high goal set before me.

Why Should Reading Be A Priority (and how much have I read)?

There is this quote by one of my most favorite writers already referenced in this post.

I absolutely believe that every writer should be some kind of reader just as a musician must listen to music in order to make music and a photographer must see the world around him/her in order to truly capture it. Once I learned to love reading, it did not take long for my love of writing to be solidified.

100 books for 2017. I did the math and that averages out to 8.33 books a month or 2.08 books per week. Thus far, I have read 3 books this month and according to Goodreads, I am behind my goal by 3 books. In addition, I would need to complete 2 additional books this week. 5 books in one week in order to get back on track. However, I am not worried. Just time to buckle down and get carried away on the waves of a few good stories.
