Intermission for Death – Excerpt

It had been an extremely busy day. Car crashes, death sentences, sick children, and freak accidents. Each of them were unique but similar in that he was there to usher them onto the next leg of their journey. His final appointment for the night (but he did not know that at the time) was with a woman who had already been given a few extra hours by the Lord of Light (although she did not know that at the time).

Upon the arrival of the New One, it was time for her appointment and he brought her to the Land of the Light. Once he finished escorting her, a squad of warriors lined up before him, blocking him from exiting the world. He knew one of the warriors and Matthias was the one who stepped forward to speak.

“We cannot allow you to leave right now.”

“Matthias” the man nodded in hello which was returned by the warrior.

“This is not a good time for pleasantries. I have many appointments to keep. As you and your troop will know, I cannot be late to a single appointment. To do so would incur the wrath of the Lord of Light.”

He pulled out the golden time piece to emphasize his point. However, he then noticed the many hands had stopped moving. Shaking the time piece, he heard the commander clear his throat.

“You are being summoned by the Lord of Light. He has asked that we show you the way, oh hooded one.”

He stared at the the faces of the warriors. There was no traces of fear but he could smell it on them. Well if the Lord of Light wanted to see him so urgently that he was willing to not only send his best army as an escort but to stop time in order to postpone every appointment, then this must be pretty serious. Plus, he had no choice but to go.

“Ok. Lead the way.”
