NaNoWriMo Day 3: Wrestling for Words

Current Word Count: 9,136

Today was one of those days were I truly had to wrestle for every word committed to page. Work was tough and sapped the energy out of me. During my lunch I stared at blank sheets of paper and an empty iPad screen. However, nothing happened.

By the time I got home it was late. On a regular  day, this would have meant no writing until maybe tomorrow  but this is NaNoWriMo and I am committed to finishing this novel even if it means writing when I barely have the will to move. I know that if I put off writing until it gets “easy” then I may never finish my projects.

So, instead of quitting, I fired up Scrivener on my iPhone and proceeded to pound out over a thousand words. It was not easy. Section by section, scene by scene I added words were I could.

There is a book I absolutely love by Anne Lamott called Bird by Bird. In the book she describes an instance where her brother is working on a bird project and he is frustrated and they end up getting the project done slowly. Bird by Bird.

This is the creative process sometimes. Sure there are days when I am caught up in a storm of inspiration and the words flow through my veins and spill onto the page. However, then there are days like today where every paragraph, sentence, and word is a battle. Days like today remind me that I am an ultra marathon runner. I am not sprinting a few short meters but I am pacing myself for a long distance run.

Step by step. Bird by bird.

Write on!
