The Feel of Paper

Traveling has finally caught up to me. I am behind by one post and so this will not be my only post for the day.

I ❤ Technology!

Like in the way some people love a certain band, writer or artist.

I love it.

Any time some new device is introduced to the general public, I am there sampling, testing and wondering if the new “it” device can fit somewhere in my life.

It fascinates me. To the extent where I am working on moving more towards that field.

But that is a different post.

When I first returned to writing about eight years ago, I learned about netbooks in the infancy of their product life cycle. There was a Starbucks that I would visit multiple times a week. I would sit with my coffee and hash out different short stories and ideas. This Starbucks happened to be next to a Radio Shack (remember those) which had a big picture of a “laptop” and a promotion they were running:

Sign a two-year data contract with AT&T, get a netbook for $99.

I was floored and this idea was too good to be true. Why would they sell a “laptop” for $99? So I started researching netbooks and wondering about this Intel atom processor that I had never heard of on other laptops.

More research and I realized that netbooks were smaller less powerful laptops. Although they would never handle something as heavy as video editing, one might meet my needs as a word processor. So, the next day, I visited Radio Shack, add the two-year agreement to my AT&T plan and I had my new writing tool.

Through the years, I have upgraded that little netbook (not before finding a 12 cell battery that would extend my Acer from 4 hours to 9 hours on a charge). My fascination with technology has resulted in several other tools being added to my arsenal in my journey as a writer. Yet, today I was stuck with a surreal revelation.

Sometimes the ideas just flow better for me when I am handwriting.

This nugget of truth has always been there in my mind, but I always believed that eventually I would adjust. Rather, I wanted to believe. As such, I have tried various programs, apps, hardware, and stylus. Even now, the first draft of this post is written on an iPad pro with the Apple pencil. (I will post a review of these items soon).

Admittedly, the Apple pencil and iPad combination is one of the closest technological substitutes that I have had the pleasure of utilizing, and I still have a strong affinity for technology.

However, there is just something about the feel of paper…
