Rain began to fall from the sky. Each drop warm and sticky.
It was the women who first noticed the droplets of blood. Families rushed home only to find their eldest child on the floor as if dead. The air was filled with hysterical shrieking.
Mr. Kerns was the first to suggest a visit to the minister. He ran into the night knocking on doors asking the men of the town
to join him. Mr. Riley was eager to join him as was Mr. Conway. Old man Jonah was already in the streets demanding the men get to binding that old devil. The old man followed the group which grew to include that new fellow Urchin and his remaining sons.
When they came to the man’s house his face was gaunt and his eyes were blood shoot; eyes of a man who had seen death one time
too many. However, it was his sons who pushed him to join the fray and demand answers.
Mayor was startled by the sound of frantic knocking. He quickly blew out the candles, swept the chalk off the floor and poured the shells into a pouch. Each item was placed in the big oak trunk, locked with a rather unusual key which he kept around his neck. Buttoning up his shirt, he walked into the hallway and found Sarah already at the door.
The men from town demanded he join them as they head to the church in search of answers.
Poor fools, thought the mayor.
Sarah stared at the blood dripping from the men and running onto their floor.
“Sarah, can you please grab a mop and clean up the mess that’s being made. You would think that you should gather your
wits about you.”
The woman nodded and headed over to the closet to do as her husband had instructed.
“Will you join us Mr. Mayor? Our children are dead in our homes and blood falls from the sky. It is madness.”
Mr. Kierns stared at the mayor who seemed to be more concerned with the large red puddles swelling on his floor. Heaven forbid he would show more concern for the people of this town, thought Mr. Kierns as he awaited an answer from the
man in white
