The Queen (sample)

The Queen had just finished stowing away the last of the dishware when the ground began to shake. Sarah looked over and saw the surprise look in the face of the monarch. It told her this was an unusual occurrence, a disruption in this peaceful world. A low rumbling sound joined the shaking, growing louder as the movement intensified. Then there was a roar.As the ground continued to shake there came a knock at the door. Ashieka and Kal-em were there, sent on an errand. Without a word the Queen turned to follow them.

“Come with me.” The Queen told Sarah.

It was extremely difficult for Sarah to follow the trio. She was unfamiliar with the layout of the forest and the moving ground and speed of those she followed made it increasingly difficult for her to keep up. As she tried to step over a large tree root, Sarah fell and was caught at the arm by the Queen.

“Careful.”

Her tone was firm but not mean. Sarah would try to be more aware of her footing.

They reached a simple hut in the center of the village. A large fire put was before the hut and many of the inhabitants were there eyes fixed on their chief. Shieka and Kal-em joined the group behind the chief. The Queen took her place in the crowd and motioned for Sarah to stand next to her.

Everyone stood silently as the ground continued to shake. No one had seen anything like this before. At least, no one in the crowd.

The Chief was very familiar with what was transpiring. His eyes were closed, lips moving in a silent recitation of words that could not be made out by anyone in attendance. Yet, there was a calm that radiated from the elder who stood before them, lips moving, arms outstretched.

Finally, the shaking subsided and the ground was still.
