There is something about short stories that is simply wonderful. As much as I love diving between the pages of an amazing novel, slipping into a short story collection can be so relaxing. It’s like breaking into a Kit Kat bar: you get four pieces of chocolate in one package. Short story collections allows the reader to savor a story, maybe even pause and reflect on all the events or jump into the next piece of chocolate.
As the year comes to a close, I find myself indulging in more collections as I race to complete my Goodreads reading challenge (just 9 more books to go!). Although I have have collections by Stephen King (The Bazaar of Bad Dreams) and Neil Gaiman (Trigger Warning) waiting in my ebooks queue, I decided to first tackle a shorter collection by a rising writer. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Doll Parts: Tales of Twisted Love
By: Azzurra Nox

This collection is shorter than standard short story collections. There are three tales of love and longing that pack a crazy punch. Please note, these stories are not for the squeamish or the more sexually reserved. Ms. Nox has no problem writing gritty scenarios and does not try to sugar coat the exploits of her colorful characters.
Apartment Story : This was my favorite of the three stories. What happens when a forgotten lover charges back into the life of a lonely artist? Watching this story unfold, I was positive that I knew how the ending would play out. However, even as I write this review, I am not quite sure who was doing what and that confusion is what made the story great.
Scared of Girls : In this story , a popular dancer hides what turns out to be a dangerous secret. A couple’s love is challenged and the dangers of societal pressures to conform is showcased. My heart was torn apart and taped back together within a matter of pages.
Post Orgasmic Chill : “Oh, what tangled webs we weave. When first we practice to deceive.” – Walter Scott Marmion
This couplet cannot be found within this story but it echoed through my mind as I reflect on the implications of each character’s decision. A twisted love triangle with a tragic ending.
Azzurra Nox built quite the roller coaster in assembling this trio of stories. Although there were a few minor issues that I found slightly distracting, a detailed editor could buff away those imperfections. If you are a fan of short stories and plots that could put Lady Gaga’s The Countess to shame, then you would enjoy Doll Parts.
